The soil
Alluvial silt and peat across the Hauraki Plains, with the water table sitting high through much of it. Peat holds water and settles over time, and the flats give you almost no natural slope to shed water off a surface.
What that means for the build
On this ground the base gets built up rather than dug down, so the turf sits above the water table instead of in it. The fall across the surface is something we create and check with a level, since the site will not give it to you. Peat also means compaction matters more, not less - a base that is not compacted properly will keep settling and take the lawn with it.
