Clay and volcanic ash, through kiwifruit country. Clay does not shed water, it holds it, and the area gets more rain than the coastal suburbs. Sites out here are also larger, often lifestyle blocks with room for a machine to get in.
What that means for the build
On clay, the base is the whole job. It needs to be deep enough and free-draining enough that water moves through and away instead of sitting under the turf, and often a drain line goes in before any basecourse does. This is the part turf-only installers subcontract; earthworks and drainage are our own trade, which is why we can tell you on site what the ground actually needs. Larger sites also mean cartage and machine access are real cost factors, so we price them openly rather than burying them.
